Characteristics of plant proteinase inhibitors and their applications in combating phytophagous insects

چکیده
Plant proteinase inhibitors (PIs), which play a potent defensive role against predators and pathogens, are natural, defense-related proteins often present in seeds and induced in certain plant tissues by herbivory or wounding. This review describes the main classes of proteinase inhibitors, the distribution and localization, general properties, the main functions, and commercial applications of plant PIs. This paper also introduces the proteinase inhibitor IIs (PIN 2) and its molecular biology, including transgenic plants expressing proteinase inhibitors against insect, pests, and pathogens, esp. in lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) and Chinese flowering cabbage (Brassica campestris ssp. parachinensis), which are widely cultivated or distributed in Southeast Asia, especially in South China, including Hong Kong. The morphorlogical and molecular characteristics of PIN 2-rich American black nightshade (Solanum americanum Mill.) was described. In addition, prospects for the application of plant PIs are also discussed.

Plant protease inhibitors in control of phytophagous insects
Plant proteinase inhibitors (PIs) have been well established to play a potent defensive role against predators and pathogens. Although diverse endogenous functions for these proteins has been proposed, ranging from regulators of endogenous proteinases to act as storage proteins, evidence for many of these roles is partial, or confined to isolated examples. On the other hand, many PIs have been ...
متن کاملCascading host-associated genetic differentiation in parasitoids of phytophagous insects.
The extraordinary diversity of phytophagous insects may be attributable to their narrow specialization as parasites of plants, with selective tradeoffs associated with alternate host plants driving genetic divergence of host-associated forms via ecological speciation. Most phytophagous insects in turn are attacked by parasitoid insects, which are similarly specialized and may also undergo host-...
متن کاملProteolysis of the 85-kilodalton crystalline cysteine proteinase inhibitor from potato releases functional cystatin domains.
The protein crystals found in potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) tuber cells consist of a single 85-kD polypeptide. This polypeptide is an inhibitor of papain and other cysteine proteinases and is capable of binding several proteinase molecules simultaneously (P. Rodis, J.E. Hoff [1984] Plant Physiol 74: 907-911). We have characterized this unusual inhibitor in more detail. Titrations of papain acti...
متن کاملAre exotic herbivores better competitors? A meta-analysis.
Competition plays an important role in structuring the community dynamics of phytophagous insects. As the number and impact of biological invasions increase, it has become increasingly important to determine whether competitive differences exist between native and exotic insects. We conducted a meta-analysis to test the hypothesis that native/ exotic status affects the outcome of herbivore comp...
متن کاملInteraction of Phytophagous Insects with Salmonella enterica on Plants and Enhanced Persistence of the Pathogen with Macrosteles quadrilineatus Infestation or Frankliniella occidentalis Feeding
Recently, most foodborne illness outbreaks of salmonellosis have been caused by consumption of contaminated fresh produce. Yet, the mechanisms that allow the human pathogen Salmonella enterica to contaminate and grow in plant environments remain poorly described. We examined the effect of feeding by phytophagous insects on survival of S. enterica on lettuce. Larger S. enterica populations were ...
